Breaking Thanksgiving Myths, Reservation Dogs Composer, and PFAS Update on NMiF: UNM Newsroom

This week on New Mexico in Focus, November is a month dedicated to the contributions of Native Americans. However, stereotypes, myths and misunderstanding of tribes are still part of the public perception. Correspondent Antonia Gonzales discusses with some members of the Indigenous community how we can all celebrate Indigenous people without promoting stereotypes or taking ownership of their culture.
In addition, it was one of the most significant shows of 2021. Dogs Reservation provides a unique, sometimes comical and sometimes poignant glimpse into the life of a group of Native American teenagers. Correspondent Laura Paskus explores what makes the show so unique, including the musical score. She talks to composer Mato Wayahi about her involvement and process.
Paskus is also speaking with New Mexico Department of Environment Secretary James Kenney about some interesting new developments regarding PFAS chemicals. This is a family of toxic substances linked to the use of firefighting foams at a handful of military installations, including Cannon and Holloman air bases. The EPA recently declared four of these chemicals as hazardous waste, at the request of Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham. Second. Kenney explains how this development can have impacts far beyond New Mexico.
And, this Thanksgiving weekend, we offer our appreciation to one of Albuquerque’s living treasures, the Bosque. This Emmy-nominated Our Land piece is a visual celebration of one of the country’s most unique and diverse public spaces.
New Mexico in Focus airs on NMPBS 5.1 (KNME HD) on Friday, November 26 at 7 p.m. and Sunday, November 28 at 7 a.m., and streams on the PBS video app.
