Kendrick pays tribute to Nipsey Hussle in “The Heart Part 5”

Kendrick Lamar released his comeback single and video in “The Heart Part 5,” and fans can’t help but talk about the song’s third verse.

With her return, K-Dot pays homage to the late Nipsey Hussle, as her face in the visual transforms into a deep fake Hussle. The entire video sees Lamar morph into popular characters like Kanye West, OJ Simpson, Jussie Smollett, and Kobe Bryant, but the Nipsey tribute is what seems to drive the track’s final bit, as well as fan conversation.

The song, which samples Marvin Gaye’s 1976 classic “I want you», closes the second half of third verse with several lines that are obviously from the perspective of Nip, who was murdered on March 31, 2019, while K. Dot was performing in Argentina.

“I wake up that morning with more heart to give to you,” Kendrick raps. “As I bleed through the speakers, feel my presence. For my brother, for my kids, I’m in heaven. For my mom, for my sister, I’m in heaven. For my dad, for my wife, I’m serious, this is heaven. To my friends, be sure to count them as blessings. To my fans, be sure to make investments in them.

Lamar then sends a message to the “killer who hastened my death”, rapping from Hussle’s perspective that his killer is forgiven, but his “soul is in question”.

“I saw the pain in your pupil when the trigger pulled in,” K-Dot spits. “And although you hurt me horribly, I was surely relieved.” I completed my mission, I was not ready to leave. But filled my days, my Creator was content.

The verse continues with a request to be celebrated “with respect” and to protect “unity”, as Lamar makes an apparent reference to Nipsey’s brother, Samiel Asghedom, aka Blacc Sam.

“And Sam, I’ll watch over you.” Make sure my kids watch all my interviews. Make sure you live out all the dreams we produce,” he raps. “Keep that genie in your brain moving. And in my neighborhood, may good prevail. Make sure these babies and their leaders get out of jail. Seek salvation when problems become real. Because you can’t save the world until you help yourself. And I can’t blame the hood the day I was killed. You had to see it, it’s the only way to feel. And even if my physique will not reap the benefits. The energy that continues emits again. I want you.”

These emotional lines from Kendrick have fans figuring out their meaning and reflecting on Hussle’s legacy as they await the entirety of Lamar’s fifth studio album. Before Mr Moral & The Big Steppers—K-Dot’s latest offering on Top Dawg Entertainment—and first on pgLang—hits streaming services Friday, May 13, find out what fans and other creatives are saying about Lamar’s ode to Nip below.
