Longtime iconic New Jersey record store closes
At a time when the vinyl record is making a comeback, Vintage Vinyl is closing its doors after 42 years of rocking Fords New Jersey with both records and live concerts.
According to their website which says “Rob and Donna are retiring! The store will close July 31st. Thank you for 42 wonderful years. It has been a great ride”
Vintage Vinyl founder and owner Rob Roth told Nj Advance Media that the pandemic was part of the reason, but it was also about seeing his children and grandchildren, and the lease was over.
“It’s time to retire,” founder and owner Rob Roth told NJ Advance Media on Monday. âI lived the dream. This is more than I could have dreamed of. It will be my legacy.
What an incredible legacy this is how it ends. Not only did Vintage Vinyl, whose slogan was from the obvious to the obscure, “sold all types of albums including punk, metal and rock, but they also put on great live shows, giving artists fans a chance to step into the ground floor of some great Jersey bands.
Some of the shows they put on included the “My Chemical Romance” debut album “The Black Parade” which they did in the store parking lot in 2006.
Other artists who have performed at Vintage Vinyl according to nj.com include The New York Dolls, Gaslight Anthem, Jimmy Eat World and Julien Baker. Roth told NJ.com they could do “one last in-store performance in the coming weeks.”
Despite the loss of another record store in New Jersey, vinyl sales are on the rise, an Associated Press article says
“Vinyl record sales skyrocketed in 2020 during the pandemic year, increasing 29% to $ 626 million and surpassing compact discs in terms of revenue, according to the Record Industry Association of America.” .
Hopefully another record store opens in the Garden State. Although if someone does, it will be very difficult to live up to the Vintage Vinyl legacy.
