Maneskin Reach for the stars with the “supermodel” produced by Max Martin
It’s safe to say that while Italian rock quartet Maneskin were quite big in their home country and parts of Europe when they hit the Eurovision stage last year, their notoriety and his popularity skyrocketed when he won the coveted award with his song “Zitti E Buoni”. “Over the past year, the band has seen their streams, sales and touring routes skyrocket, appeared on ‘Saturday Night Live’ and at the Coachella Festival – and perhaps most impressively of all, began working with Max Martin, the most successful songwriter-producer of the past 25 years (from Britney Spears and Backstreet Boys to Katy Perry to The Weeknd and Taylor Swift), on their next album.
Although the group premiered a new anti-Putin song called “Gasoline” at Coachella last month, the first fruit of the new partnership arrives tonight: the single “Supermodel,” which drops tonight. While Martin started out as a lead singer in a hard rock band, it’s the first time in many years he’s worked with a band – and it’s hard not to notice that the song’s riff owes more than a bit like “Smells Like Teen Spirit” by Nirvana.
“Yeeepppp”, shyly admits bassist Victoria De Angelis. “It started with Max, but we worked on it, Thomas changed it a bit and added more.”
Guitarist Thomas Raggi adds: “I was inspired a lot by the Californian atmosphere!”
The group has been working on the new album, which is not finished, in Los Angeles for three months. Besides Martin, producers Mattman & Robin, Justin Tranter and others are also involved.
“We met Max at our first gig in Los Angeles in November,” says De Angelis. “He had heard about us because of Eurovision and we talked and then we decided to work together.”
Singer Damiano David adds: “We did more or less half the album with him – ten songs with him, but not all. Working with him, first of all, was a huge chance to learn new things. things – he’s been doing this for 30 years and done so many great things – and it was also just awesome. When you write a song with him, it’s going to be more or less a 100% great song!”
Asked about Martin’s reputedly meticulous work processes, he added: “He’s very Scandinavian!”
Pressed for more details on the new material, the band didn’t give much — “You’ll have to wait for the record! We want to be mysterious” – but De Angelis added: “We experimented a lot on the record. It’s still us, of course, but I think the fans will like it. We also have some songs that we wrote a few years ago, songs that we wrote completely by ourselves.
In addition to meeting Martin, the band’s US tour last fall saw them opening for the Rolling Stones in Las Vegas. The band members gushed from the show and the experience.
“We met Mick and Keith Richards!” enthused De Angelis. “Mick had listened to our music and was really happy that we were playing real instruments. Keith said, ‘I don’t know who the fuck you are’” – they all laughed – “but I know you’re doing great, so congratulations!
“He was very iconic, very rock and roll,” David added.
The group will perform “Supermodel” when they return to the Eurovision Song Contest on Saturday, and a video for the song – which they were working on at the time of this interview on Thursday – is due in a few weeks.
After that, the band hit the road again in Europe from June and returned to the United States for another tour from Seattle on Halloween night.
