New artists join Adele and Dua Lipa on UK gender-neutral top prize list | UK prices
Adele, Ed Sheeran, Little Simz and Dave topped the most Brit Awards nominations, as the ceremony transcends gender categories.
Each artist won four nominations, including in the new ‘Artist of the Year’ category which replaced ‘British Male’ and ‘British Woman’, and for Album of the Year. New awards have been added this year to recognize excellence in genres: alternative / rock, hip-hop / grime / rap, dance, and pop / R & B.
The change in gender awards came after criticism of the 2021 ceremony by non-binary singer Sam Smith, whose gender identity meant they couldn’t be nominated for either the male or female artist awards. They said: “I look forward to a time when the awards show can reflect the society we live in.”
UK organizers responded that they were “committed to changing the show” and announced a consultation, finally unveiling the changes last month. Tom March, co-chairman of Polydor Records, who is this year’s UK chairman, said: âIt is important that the Brits continue to evolve and aim to be as inclusive as possible.
There was a risk that the abolition of gender awards would see the new mixed categories skew in favor of men, which have dominated some recent ceremonies – but more solo artists and all-female groups were nominated this year than at any one. moment in the past decade.
There are a few known successful artists among the nominees – Dua Lipa appears in the Pop / R & B and Song of the Year categories despite releasing very little new music – but there are a number of newbies as well. South Yorkshire pop singer Self Esteem, who received the album and song of the year award by Guardian critics, was nominated for Best New Artist, alongside Central Cee, Griff, Joy Crookes and – six years after her debut album – Little Simz. Self-Esteem, aka Rebecca Taylor, said on Instagram: âAccessories to Brits for portraying a 35-year-old woman. We don’t just become obsolete!
Central Cee earns three nominations in total in his first British appearance, capping a decisive year for the 23-year-old rapper who saw him dominate the Mobo and Rated awards for British black music, and score two top 10 hits Veteran dance producer David Guetta is also nominated three times, for his contribution to three collaborative dancefloor tracks: Bed, Heartbreak Anthem and Remember. Geordie singer-songwriter Sam Fender also won three nominations, including in the prestigious Artist of the Year and Album of the Year categories – he said he was “completely overwhelmed and honored” to ‘to be recognized.
There is a diversity of artists vying for Band of the Year, with the four-time Coldplay winners extending their record number of category nominations to nine, plus rap duo D-Block Europe, indie rockers Wolf Alice, the London Grammar dream-poppers and Little Mix, which in 2021 became the first girl group to win the award.
Shortlisted for the International Artist Award, which again replaces two gender-specific awards, an all-American lineup featuring Taylor Swift, Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, Lil Nas X and Doja Cat.
The international groups category is more globally oriented, with Abba – who was nominated for this award at the very first UK ceremony in 1977 – appearing alongside Italian Eurovision winners MÃ¥neskin, K- megastars pop BTS, from American group AOR The War on Drugs, and Silk Sonic, the nostalgic funk supergroup formed by Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak.
A Brit Award has already been awarded: the Rising Star Award for New Talent, won by pop singer Holly Humberstone. Fender won this award in 2019; last year’s winner Griff receives two nominations elsewhere this year, as does the former nominee for rising star Crookes, whose debut album The skin reached the UK top five.
The Producer and Songwriter of the Year awards will be announced in January, ahead of the Feb. 8 ceremony at the O2 Arena, first presented by comedian Mo Gilligan, with support from Maya Jama and Clara Amfo. Overall there are 15 awards up for grabs, the most in British history.
The awards are voted on by the Brits Academy, which includes musicians alongside personalities in the music industry and media, although the genre categories are voted on by the public through TikTok. Nominees in both Song of the Year categories are determined by UK chart performance, but the winner is chosen by the Academy.
Adele will likely become a favorite in all four of her categories, having recovered alongside Ed Sheeran and Lipa as the UK’s biggest contemporary pop star. His fourth album, 30, was released six years after her previous one, 25, during which she divorced her husband, Simon Konecki, the father of her son, Angelo. The album traces relationship conflicts and their fallout in generally candid and emotional terms, and has enjoyed phenomenal success since its release last month, becoming the best-selling album of the year in the United States in just three days. If she wins all four categories, she will take home the most UK awards alongside Robbie Williams, with 13.
Sheeran will be delighted to add to his previous six wins the year he released his fifth album, =, and Dave could potentially win Album of the Year for the second time in three years, after his debut Psychodrama won the award in 2020.
By joining them at the top of British pop, Little Simz marks his transition from cult artist to mainstream star. The critically adored rapper, celebrated for the way she deploys a high level of technical skill in self-seeking lyricism, had barely hit the UK charts with her first three albums, but reached the UK top five with her fourth , Sometimes I could be introverted.
There are no glaring snapshots, although big stars Justin Bieber, Drake and The Weeknd could all have hoped for a nomination for an international artist.
