Ulster County resident Kelleigh McKenzie is among four Hudson Valley songwriters set to appear on PBS’ hour-long special “We Remember: Songs of Survivors.”

The special follows four singer-songwriters who work for Rosendale-based community arts organization SageArts and visit local Holocaust survivors and create original songs based on their conversations, according to a press release. The program is offered by the Jewish Family Service of Orange County.

“We Remember: Songs of Survivors” offers an in-depth look at the relationships that develop over the months-long songwriting process before ending with a moving live concert where survivors and songwriters are celebrated by friends, family and community, the outlet mentioned.

“At a time when the world is facing the horrors of war and hatred, we wanted to tell this hopeful story of perseverance and love,” said co-producer Ilene Cutler.

In-depth interviews with survivors and access to rare personal archives reveal revealing stories, many of which have been buried deep in their memories for decades, the statement said.

Meanwhile, McKenzie, who is chairman of the Ulster County Democratic Committee, and the video diaries of the three other songwriters document their own thoughts, feelings and experiences of telling the story of a Holocaust survivor. through song.

“We wanted to shed light on the devastating experiences of Holocaust survivors while celebrating the possibilities of healing through the power of music,” said co-producer Tim Miller. “Little did we know this film, with its powerful message, would change the lives of both survivors and songwriters.

The documentary airs Tuesday, April 26 at 8 p.m. on PBS and will be available on PBS.org and the PBS app.
