See New ‘West Side Story’ Trailer Starring NJ’s Rachel Zegler, Photos From The Movie
Assemble, sharks and jets. It’s time to scold.
Clifton’s Rachel Zegler has her big movie moment singing Leonard and Bernstein’s “Tonight” in Steven Spielberg’s new “West Side Story” trailer.
Paterson also stars in the 2021 version of Spielberg from the 1957 musical about Cursed Lovers.
Legendary director Zegler and the cast of the film used Silk City as the main base when filming the musical in 2019. The streets of Paterson replaced the Sharks and Jets turf in 1950s Manhattan.
20th Century Disney Studios released more footage from the film on Wednesday, along with the latest trailer, which shows scenes filmed near Paterson Town Hall, among other local locations.
The first trailer aired in April during the Oscars.
“West Side Story,” which also filmed in Newark and New York, will be Zegler’s first big screen, although she has been cast for other leading roles since 2019.
She has a role in “Shazam! Fury of the Gods” aka “Shazam 2”, due out in 2023 starring Zachary Levi, Helen Mirren, Lucy Liu, Adam Brody, Jack Dylan Grazer and Asher Angel.
Zegler will also be the new Snow White in an upcoming live-action adaptation of the 1937 Disney animated film.
Before playing the role that launched her career, Zegler, 20, a graduate of Immaculate Conception High School in Lodi, played Maria in a BergenPAC Performing Arts School production of “West Side Story” in 2017. Zegler, who is of Colombian descent, speaks with a Puerto Rican accent in Spielberg’s film.
Spielberg’s updated musical, originally slated for release on December 18, 2020 and delayed by the COVID-19 pandemic, is now due in theaters on December 10.
So get ready to scold … but only if you’re ready to step into a movie theater. While many other carry-over films have been made available for home streaming viewing, Spielberg’s film will only be available in theaters.
Ansel Elgort (“Baby Driver”), 27, plays the Tony to Zegler’s Maria.
Tony’s winner, David Alvarez (“Billy Elliot”), 27, plays Maria’s brother Bernardo, who warns her against being with Tony.
Tony-nominated actress Ariana DeBose (“The Prom”), 30, plays Anita, the role Rita Moreno played in the 1961 film version of the musical.
Moreno, 89, who won an Oscar for her performance, returns in the 2021 version of the musical as a different character, Valentina, a new take on Doc’s character from the story. The actor is also a producer of the film.
Valentina’s message to Tony, as seen in the trailer: “Life Matters More Than Love.”
Besides Zegler, Paterson, and Newark, other Jersey connections can be found in the film’s cast. Patrick Riggins, an actor from North Arlington, plays Baby John.
Corey Stoll, who plays Junior Soprano in the upcoming “Sopranos” prequel film “The Many Saints of Newark”, plays Lieutenant Schrank.
