SOCAN Foundation announces Laura Niquay as recipient of TD Indigenous Songwriter Award
Five additional artists receive special accolades
TORONTO, July 7, 2022 /CNW/ – The SOCAN Foundation is delighted to announce Laura Niquay as the recipient of the annual award TD Indigenous Songwriters Awards. The critically acclaimed Attikamek artist from Trois-Rivières, QC is recognized for her songs “Moteskano” and “Nicto Kicko“, works that offer a glimpse of his supercharged folk-grunge universe.
Established in 2018, the SOCAN Foundation TD Indigenous Songwriters Award was created to recognize and celebrate the artistic merit demonstrated by Indigenous songwriters of all genres. Niquay will receive a cash prize of $10,000 in addition to opportunities and efforts for his career development.
Special honors from $1,000 are also made for anyma, Jayli Wolf-Saulteau, Kristi Sinclair, LJ Tyson, Ghost Guardian Shaneand recognize their works.

Hundreds of artist applications from across Canada spanning a wide variety of musical genres were submitted for consideration, and winners were selected by a jury and advisory board of prominent Indigenous artists and industry leaders. , including First Nations, Métis and Inuit. Since childhood, Laura Niquay was nurtured by the classical guitar sounds of her family in the small community of Wemotaci in Mauricie, QC. The time soon came when Laura, too, took up a guitar to compose her own songs. She stands out by singing in her native language, Atikamekw, with an incomparable voice.
Critically acclaimed, his latest album was finely crafted over several years with his sidekick Simon Walls, as well as the production by the team of Nomad Music.The result is a multi-layered, luminous and complex opus.
